WHAT ARE HUMANITARIAN PRINCIPLES?

WHAT ARE HUMANITARIAN

PRINCIPLES?

All IRHGI activities are guided by the four humanitarian principles:humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. These principles provide the foundations for humanitarian action. They arecentral to establishing and maintaining access to affected people, whether in a natural disaster  or a complex emergency, such as armed conflict Promoting and ensuring compliance with the principles are essential elements of effective
humanitarian coordination.

Origins and implementation

The humanitarian principles are derived from the core principles, which have long guided the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the national Red Cross/Red
Crescent Societies. The principles’ centrality to the work of OCHA and other humanitarian organizations is formally enshrined in two General Assembly resolutions. The first three
principles (humanity, neutrality and impartiality)are endorsed in General Assembly resolution 46/182, which was adopted in 1991.This resolution also established the role of the Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC). General Assembly resolution 58/114 (2004) added independence as a fourth key principle underlying humanitarian action. The General Assembly has repeatedly reaffirmed the importance of promoting and respecting these principles within the framework of humanitarian assistance. Commitment to the principles has also been expressed at an institutional level by many humanitarian organizations. Of particular note is the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and non-governmental organizations in dis aster relief. The code provides a set of common standards for organizations involved in humanitarian activities, including a commitment to adhere to thehumanitarian principles. More than 492 organizations have signed the Code of Conduct. Also of note is the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response elaborated by the Sphere Project.

What are the YDGs?

We invite you to participate in the launch and development of the Youth Development Goals for Shared Global Prosperity. Bringing together youth leaders and organizations from around the world, we aim to establish a common platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing, so that our united efforts will lead to broader shared progress in the areas most important to the development of youth. The YDGs are a series of 10 goals modeled after the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They are developed specifically as goals by and for youth and aim to allow young people to directly impact their lives today while also securing a better future for this generation.

What Can You Do?
Our goal is to magnify youth voices and dreams through the YDGs. To this end, you can serve as an Ambassador of the YDGs and represent the youth of your nation. This role requires both servant leadership and civic engagement, which can be demonstrated through your active engagement with global development and youth leadership. To this extent, you can start your own project and choose a specific Youth Development Goal that you aim to achieve. You will gain access to our global network and the various resources that we have to bring your project to success. Please contact your Regional YDG Director for more information about the Ambassador role and how you can contribute to this powerful initiative.

Moving forward,  you will be able to join in virtual roundtable dialogues to implement the YDGs and launch your own projects with support from our expansive global network and partner organizations. We highly value openness and shared collaboration, and thus strive to make this an accessible and organic process that is truly representative of youth of all different backgrounds.
Youth are the foundation of society and the future of our world. It is for this reason that young people today must strive towards shared global prosperity. We are excited to see how you can help transform the globe!
